Hotel Mar Adentro, San José del Cabo, Mexico by Miguel Angel Aragonés
When sea and desert meet
Minimalist geometrical shapes in this complex reflect the perfect bond between nature and architecture.
Erected in different phases, the building initially gave rise to hotel rooms, followed by apartments and homes, and finally concluding with the recent wellness center.
It is an actual town constructed on the sea, built along the horizon and floating on a mirror of water divided by pools and the ocean. In particular, the pools are filled with seawater desalinated and purified through a system fueled by UV rays.
The large glass walls allow continuous visual contact with the landscape and, on sunny days, the cubes are robed by white shades which drop lightly from the ceiling, drowning the indoor pools with bright lighting effects.
Mar Adentro is the name chosen for this spectacular village housing water as its protagonist. Water entirely envelops the complex, even coming right up to the building entrances.
A central nest, woven by hundreds of branches, amplifies the peace which dominates the genius loci of this space. The nest cupola sits in stark contrast with surrounding geometrical volumes, without disrupting the harmony and serenity of this unique place.
