Raised decking around the pool using SUPATRAY ZeroFlex
Raised decking around the pool using SUPATRAY ZeroFlex
Along the southern coast of France, the refurbishment of a private poolside patio provided an opportunity to put the new SUPATRAY ZeroFlex system to the test. A seemingly idyllic setting, yet technically one of the most demanding: intense sun exposure, constant humidity, direct contact with pool water, and clients with high aesthetic expectations.
The brief was clear: a raised flooring system capable of blending harmoniously with the pool edge and withstanding the stresses typical of a space subject to intensive daily use; and, in terms of design, to be laid in a staggered pattern that would enhance the linearity of the whole.
The choice fell on the UPTEC safety system with its main components: the SUPASFX adjustable supports, the SUPATRAY ZeroFlex safety grids and the SUPATRAYGRIP locking discs.
The challenges of the construction site
A poolside patio presents a series of technical constraints that leave no room for approximation. The installation plan posed numerous challenges due to the presence of the pool, requiring a support system capable of precise adjustments and which, at the same time, prevented concentrated loads from being transmitted to the underlying waterproofing layers. The SUPASFX supports, combined with the SUPAR extension ring, proved to be the best choice for this project, thanks to their height adjustability, adapting with millimetre precision to the requirements and ensuring a perfectly horizontal walking surface across the entire length of the patio.
To further complicate matters, the client had specified staggered installation as an essential requirement from the outset. An understandable choice from an aesthetic point of view, but one which, from a technical perspective, represents one of the most critical scenarios for raised installation systems. In the absence of a central support, grids with low rigidity tend to flex under asymmetrical loads, causing instability that can be felt when walking on them and potentially leading to structural problems in the medium term. This is a well-known limitation that often forces designers and installers to abandon the desired layout or add unplanned intermediate supports, with consequences for both time and cost.

The technical solution: ZeroFlex
It is in this context that the SUPATRAY ZeroFlex system has made its most significant contribution. The grating, made from high-quality polypropylene and measuring 598 × 598 mm, is designed to offer near-zero deflection even under asymmetrical loads – precisely the conditions that staggered laying systematically creates. This made it possible to achieve the required layout without adding central supports and without compromising structural stability in any way.
The SUPATRAYGRIP locking discs completed the system, joining adjacent gratings and transforming the surface into a continuous, integrated whole. Their quick and precise installation eliminated any risk of misalignment or micro-shifts over time — a particularly important consideration in a setting such as a poolside area, where cycles of wetting and drying and seasonal temperature variations constantly stress the materials.
The system’s load-bearing capacity — up to 800 kg per fixing point — ensured it was fully suited to the anticipated conditions of use, including the high footfall typical of summer social spaces.
Execution and outcome
On site, the removal of additional central supports significantly simplified the installation process, allowing for a smooth and continuous laying process. The SUPATRAYGRIP discs slot into place easily and ensure precise alignment right from the very first elements laid, reducing the margin for error and speeding up the overall installation time.
The patio handed back to the client is a space that fully meets expectations: a stable, visually balanced surface, capable of rapidly draining water from the pool and withstanding daily use without failure in a climate that takes no prisoners with materials. The staggered layout, achieved without structural compromises, gives the whole project that compositional quality which distinguishes a well-designed outdoor project from a merely functional solution.
This project along the southern French coast has reaffirmed a principle that those working in outdoor spaces know well: the most beautiful conditions are often the most technically demanding. Sun, water, heat, intensive use — everything that makes a poolside patio a desirable space puts every component of the installation system to the test.
The combination of SUPASFX, ZeroFlex and SUPATRAYGRIP has proven capable of handling these conditions without compromising either design freedom or structural integrity. In a market where these two objectives are still too often presented as mutually exclusive, this shipyard has demonstrated the opposite.
